The star of The Rag Trade and On The Buses reveals a rich new talent as a writer, with the enthralling, often funny, sometimes moving account of his humble origins in London's East End and how he started his professional career as an entertainer in the rough-and-tumble of working men's clubs.Reg Varney has many faces.
Before The Rag Trade and On The Buses,he topped the bill in music hall.He has also played pantomime (invariably as the dame),made several successful films, and most recently (then around 1990) toured Australia and the Far East with his one-man show.
In THE LITTLE CLOWN he tells his own story - and what a life! Born during WW1 in the East End,he was so small by his teens (not yet 5ft) that the obvious career for him on leaving school was as a messenger boy.But at weekends he lived another life, playing the piano,piano-accordion and singing, initially among the working men's clubs of east London, later in music halls and pubs, and memorably,as he recounts,on one occasion busking on Southend beach. The Varneys were a close family and in THE LITTLE CLOWN he paints an evocative, touching
picture of making ends meet on his father's weekly wage of £2.10s and what extra his mother could bring in from taking in laundry and keeping chickens. But the Varneys - Reg was one of five children - lacked for little.THE LITTLE CLOWN is a joyful memoir that establishes Reg Varney in a hitherto unsuspected new career as a
writer. He is currently (then 1990) working on a sequel to this title.
